Banarasi sarees are traditional Indian sarees that originate from Varanasi, also known as Banaras, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India. These sarees are highly regarded for their opulent silk fabric, intricate weaving, and luxurious designs. 

Banarasi sarees are predominantly woven in silk, known for its lustrous appearance and smooth texture. Pure silk Banarasi sarees are particularly prized for their richness. One of the distinguishing features of Banarasi sarees is the extensive use of zari, which is metallic thread, often made of gold or silver. Zari is intricately woven into the fabric to create elaborate patterns and motifs. 
Banarasi sarees often feature intricate floral patterns, including butidar (small flower motifs) and bel (creeper motifs). Some sarees showcase geometric patterns and designs, adding a contemporary touch to the traditional weave. Many Banarasi sarees draw inspiration from Mughal art, featuring motifs like kalga and bel, reminiscent of Mughal architecture.Banaras Sarees was certified GI Tag in the year 2009.
